Kiawah Island Combines World-Class Golf with Nationally Recognized Golf Teaching Program

While Kiawah Island Golf Resort has always had a world-class reputation for great golf courses, the opening of the Kiawah Island Golf Learning Center now establishes the resort as a nationally recognized teaching program.

Turtle Point, with its central location on the resort, is home to the golf learning center and the Kiawah Island Golf Academy. This innovative facility features private instructional tees, and private green and bunker capable of handling large and small groups. In the unlikely event of inclement weather, the center has seven covered hitting bays, indoor/outdoor putting areas and a classroom.

The indoor video studio features the V1 Digital Coaching System, with computerized graphics, before and after comparisons, as well as comparisons to some of today's top PGA and LPGA professionals. This is the ultimate teaching and coaching systems, providing immediate feedback to maximize the student's improvement and understanding. The classroom has some top training aids, mirrors and several video monitors to help expedite improvement.

The small golf shop inside offers golf equipment from some top manufacturers like Titleist, Nike, Callaway, Odyssey and Cleveland Golf. The shop also carries a wide array of drivers, wedges, putters and junior equipment along with some favorite training aids.

Kiawah Island Golf Academy

The resort's most popular vacation package, the Golf Academy provides instruction in every aspect of golf. Early instruction focuses on the mechanics of the full swing and short game. Later discussion stresses learning touch, incorporating swing changes, course management and strategy. The final day's lessons reinforce the positive changes, enhance awareness of the improper motions and provide practice routines that will lead to long-term improvement.

  • Small Class Sizes to increase individual attention. Maximum of 3:1 Student to teacher ratio.
  • 18 Holes of On-Course Instruction (2 Nine Hole Lessons)
  • World Renowned Golf Courses and a custom designed Golf Learning Center
  • Highly qualified PGA Professionals, including Golf Academy Director Steve Mitchell who has been featured on the Golf Channel's Academy Live program, is a Masters Series Instructor for Golf Tips Magazine and was recently one of nearly 500 nominees for Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers in America List.

Private and Semi-Private Instruction

The resort's experienced staff of PGA teaching professionals and apprentices offers personalized instruction for individuals or small groups. Instruction stresses golf fundamentals on all aspects of the game, both physical and mental. Packages are available for those who wish to take multiple lessons throughout their stay.

Corporate and Group Activities

A variety of golf instruction activities are available with the Meeting Group in mind. Anything from a "Coffee Break Exhibition" to Putting/Long Drive Contests at evening social events to customized Golf Academy Packages. Let the Kiawah Professional Staff make your Golf meeting an extra-special success.

Daily Clinics

Daily one-hour clinics provide full swing and short game instruction (5:1 student to teacher ratio). These clinics are geared towards the beginner golfer wanting to learn the fundamentals of golf and for the experienced player wanting to refresh his/her understanding of the golf motion.

American Tour Golf School Offers Comprehensive Programs for Serious Players

"Practice doesn't make perfect; practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect."

The quote above, attributed to no one in particular, has no doubt been used by countless coaches and instructors regarding a variety of endeavors - from sports to playing a musical instrument. But nowhere is it truer than in golf.

Golf is often called the game for a lifetime. Many would argue that is because it takes a lifetime to learn. And even then, only a small percentage of those who play ever achieve a degree of proficiency that trims their handicap into the realm of single digits.

Ask anyone who has ever played the game and all will agree; golf is a difficult sport. Those same players will also tell you that golf is one of the most rewarding pursuits in all of sports. Little can compare with the feel of a perfectly struck golf shot. And helping players achieve that feeling is the goal of countless golf instructors and schools throughout the game.

One school, however, is more serious than some others when it comes to preparing its students. Billed as a 'grad school for golfers,' American Tour Golf Schools, located near the historic port city of Charleston, could be called a boot camp for serious players. ATGS represents a melding of solid, proven teaching philosophies and techniques with the latest in high-tech monitoring and testing equipment in one comprehensive program that works to evaluate and improve every aspect of the student's game - mechanical, physical, analytical and psychological.

American Tour Golf Schools teach a single-axis, rotary swing, which revolves around the spine. Straight from the skull to the tailbone, the spine remains straight, or neutral, throughout the swing. Swing speed is generated by turning around this neutral spine position and the faster the turn or spin, the straighter the axis. The same principle applies to a figure skater's spin or the spin of a gyroscope.

American Tour Golf Schools, 20 minutes north of historic Charleston and only 10 minutes from the beach, is based at Charleston National Country Club. Although it is independently owned and operated, students can take advantage of the facilities at Charleston National, including the golf course and fitness center. Charleston National features a Rees Jones-designed course with holes overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and the barrier islands beyond.
