Elegant Island Living
By Patra Taylor
South Carolina’s coast is protected by a chain of barrier islands — long, narrow, offshore deposits of sand that parallel the coastline. Barrier islands are separated from the mainland by a shallow sound, bay or lagoon, and from one another by narrow tidal inlets.
The barrier islands nearest to Charleston are characterized by a dynamic beach system, grassy dunes, maritime forests with wetlands in the interiors, and salt or tidal marshes on the lee side facing the mainland.
Through the years, barrier islands have not only been recognized as fragile ecosystems that provide a safe harbor to the East Coast’s indigenous wildlife, but also as highly sought-after places for people to live in harmony with the environment. In fact, development of these priceless treasures has set national standards for ecofriendly construction in concert with nature’s simple elegance.
Isle of Palms: Special Place for Fun in the Sun
Whether you are adventurous or prefer to relax in the sun, the Isle of Palms is the place to be. Located about 14 miles southeast of downtown Charleston, the island offers great surfing, swimming, windsurfing, surfcasting and offshore fishing — something for everyone with a passion for the ocean. Locals also enjoy crabbing and shrimping in the creeks and marshes. For landlubbers, a number of specialty stores invite shoppers to browse for fine gifts and souvenirs. Nestled on the northeast end of the island is the world-renowned Wild Dunes Resort, home to nearly three miles of beach, luxurious oceanfront accommodations, an acclaimed tennis center, a number of fine restaurants, and two championship golf courses designed by Tom Fazio.
Sullivan’s Island: The East Coast’s Casual, Unhurried Beach
Sullivan’s Island is one of the most family-friendly beach communities on the South Carolina coast. Treasured for its magnificent beach and charming seaside neighborhoods, the island also boasts a significant role in American history. During the Revolutionary War, a substantial British fleet and army were decisively defeated at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island near Fort Moultrie, marking the first American victory over the British. Its literary history is also noteworthy, with a number of distinguished artists and authors having found sanctuary in the relaxed island. Located about 10 miles southeast of downtown Charleston, the island offers a number of casual local dining venues that lure visitors back year after year.
Daniel Island: Charleston’s Island Town
Within the city of Charleston, a very special island town has emerged. Daniel Island is a place where traditional neighborhoods and a vibrant downtown enjoy a spectacular setting surrounded by rivers and creeks and beautiful marsh views. It is a place where people live, work, play and learn. A place with a unique mix of shops and businesses, schools and churches, and a never-ending list of recreational options. The Daniel Island Club offers an incomparable private country club experience. Members enjoy a spectacular golf course designed by Tom Fazio, as well as a second course designed by Rees Jones.
Kiawah Island: The Finest Golf Resort on the East Coast
Located about 21 miles southwest of Charleston, Kiawah Island abounds in natural beauty, from its endless acres of marsh to its thick forests of pine, magnolia and live oak. Whether you stay at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort or a privately owned home, villa or cottage, you are a short distance from championship golf, award-winning tennis, a variety of specialty shops, and one of the finest stretches of white-sand beach. In fact, The Travel Channel named it one of the nation’s top 10 beaches. Kiawah Island is a private community, with access limited to property owners and guests of the resort.
Seabrook Island: An Island to Call Your Own
Seabrook Island is unique among South Carolina’s resort and residential communities. Wholly owned by its property owners, the island is distinctive in that it is, by design, more exclusive and tranquil than other resort islands. The natural beauty here is striking as you enter under a canopy of great live oak trees. Just beyond the security gate, Seabrook’s distinctive Equestrian Center helps define the laid-back lifestyle enjoyed there. Located about 22 miles southwest of Charleston, the island also boasts three miles of private pristine beach — the only one in the area on which people can ride horses — and world-class golf on two meticulously maintained courses.
